The Senate of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi approved the establishment of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998 and a consultant in the person of Professor D.I Saror was appointed to make a feasibility study of the proposed College by the then Vice Chancellor, Professor E.O. Gyang.
In the year 2000 the National University Commission gave the University approval to start the College and in 2000/2001 academic session, the College took off with a set of 12 Veterinary students who matriculated in August 2001.
6 – Year DVM Programme
A minimum of five credit passes in Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), or General Certificate of education Ordinary Level (GCE,O/L) in the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and English Language at not more than two sitting. In addition the candidate must have passed the University Matriculation examination (UME) and or the university pre – degree examination in relevant subjects at a level adjudged adequate by the University.
5 Year DVM Programme
In addition to meeting the SSCE/GCE O/L requirements as stated above, candidates shall posses at least three Advanced Level/IJMB Passesin Chemistry, Biology/Zoology, and Physics or Mathematics. Special consideration is given to candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND in Animal Health and Husbandry, or Animal Production) to do the 5 – year degree programme, provided the HND is at least credit level.
